Kitchen Design Trends for 2024
Anastasia shares her insights on the evolving kitchen landscape, emphasizing open concepts, innovative storage solutions, and the integration of technology to enhance functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Several kitchen design trends have emerged, and we at Kaminskiy Design & Remodeling expect them to continue and strengthen in 2024.
Open-Concept Designs: “Many of our clients want to enhance their homes with Open-Concept designs that unite kitchen space with adjacent rooms, often including outdoor areas. As part of a typical kitchen remodel, we’re removing (sometimes load-bearing) walls between adjacent rooms to create larger spaces more suitable for entertaining friends and family. In addition, we’re installing large, multifold doors that can be fully opened to give easy access to the outdoors, where we create covered, climate-controlled spaces with outdoor kitchens, fire pits, dining tables, pool, and spa for the ultimate indoor/outdoor entertaining so well suited to our moderate San Diego climate. It’s gracious living at its finest!”
Beverage Centers and Butler’s Pantries: “Another trend we love is the addition of beverage centers and Butler’s pantries. Many homes have alcove cabinets near the kitchen, living room, or family room that can be converted into a convenient beverage center, with undercounter wine coolers, beverage fridges, and/or ice makers, with mugs, glasses, and stemware in cabinets above. Coffee stations are popular, sometimes with plumbed coffee or espresso machines. Wine lovers are installing wine dispensing/preservation systems, which allow several bottles of wine to be opened at a time so they can be enjoyed at the homeowner’s leisure and satisfy varying tastes. Others are taking spaces adjacent to kitchens to create butler’s pantries with sinks, dishwashers, microwaves, etc., making entertaining a breeze by moving messy meal prep and cleanup to areas that can be quickly hidden behind closed doors.”
Maximizing Views: “Many homeowners are optimizing ocean views by adding windows to view-side walls, which requires eliminating wall cabinets. Base cabinets with large, deep drawers are trendy and can replace the need for wall cabinets altogether. Cabinet accessory manufacturers offer drawer organizers that store dishes, bowls, coffee cups, drinking glasses, and other items traditionally stored in wall cabinets. As a rule of thumb, we generally only include one or two base cabinets with full-height doors in a kitchen for tall items like lobster pots, wine buckets, etc.–most of our clients prefer drawers for storage, as their contents are more quickly and easily accessed compared to base cabinets with shelves or roll-outs.”
Statement Appliances and Fixtures: “Statement” appliances and fixtures are hugely popular! Refrigerators with media screens and “smart” functions that send status updates on levels of food staples, manage family calendars, stream music and photos or art, and even see who’s at the front door are all the rage. Others opt for ranges in eye-popping colors or visually stunning hammered copper or zinc hoods and/or farmhouse sinks.”
Warm, Natural Tones: “After a long run at Number One, all-white and/or gray kitchens are on the way out. Warmer natural and stained wood slab cabinet doors are making a comeback, often combined with exotic, colorful natural slab stone countertops, especially on islands and often with waterfall edges, creating vibrant focal points. Continuing the same slab stone used on the countertop onto the backsplash lends an elegant, harmonious feel. Contrasting painted or dark-stained islands and/or base cabinets provide welcome visual interest after years of monochromatic white and gray kitchens.”
Technological Advances: “Electrical advances continue unabated! Square recessed lights, outlets with USB or USB-C ports, outlet strips tucked under wall cabinets, outlets in the back of drawers, and pop-up electronic ports are all the rage. InvisaCook even makes cooktops that require no surface elements installed under porcelain countertops. This is perfect for small kitchens, as the area can be used as a regular countertop when not being used to heat food.”
Bathroom Design Trends 2024
The spotlight on bathrooms reveals a preference for curbless showers, bidet toilet seats, wall-mounted faucets for cleanliness, discreet bath safety features, and illuminated mirrors for enhanced functionality and style.
Curbless showers: “Showers with no tall curb at entry- also referred to as “curbless,” “zero entry,” “beach entry,” “barrier-free,” or “walk-in” showers- are by far the hottest trend in modern bath design. They are more aesthetically pleasing, easier to clean, and considerably safer than curbed showers, especially for aging homeowners and those with mobility or balance challenges. Curbless showers can be installed on slabs or raised foundations using different techniques that have become relatively routine as their popularity has increased.”
Bidet toilet seats: “Sometimes called “washlet” seats, bidet toilet seats add the function of a traditional bidet to a regular toilet without requiring plumbing, purchasing a separate fixture, or having the space to install it. In addition to a multitude of water functions, many models offer variable heat seats, blow-drying functions, UV sanitizing, self-cleaning capabilities, and even night lights! Bidet seats also raise the seat level to make it easier and more comfortable for users to raise and lower themselves.”
Wall-mounted bath faucets: “Wall-mounted bath faucets, especially single-handle models, are hot, hot, hot!! Unlike deck-mounted bath faucets, water doesn’t pool around wall-mounted faucets, so both fixture and countertop remain cleaner and good-looking longer. In addition, they make the countertop so much easier to clean. One heads-up: Vertical and horizontal placement of the wall-mounted faucet should be carefully coordinated by your design professional to ensure that the water flow into the sink and drain is optimal to minimize splash-out.”
Bath safety: “It doesn’t have to look ugly and institutional. Companies like Invisia are making grab bars and shower seats in various styles and finishes to match any bath décor. Many of their products combine multiple functions, such as grab bars with shampoo shelves or soap dishes. These products help aging and/or disabled homeowners remain in their homes by helping to prevent falls in the bath, where they most frequently occur, while still looking stylish.”
Illuminated mirrors: “Especially those containing medicine cabinets are a trend that won’t be leaving. They provide excellent illumination for makeup application, shaving, etc., and can be installed on a dimmer to lend ambiance while offering convenient extra storage. They may also alleviate the need for additional wall-mounted vanity lights, saving the expense of adding J-boxes and purchasing fixtures. Robern offers convenient slide-up models, some of which may prefer hinged styles. Many even contain electrical outlets for electric toothbrushes, shavers, etc.”
Jean’s Forecast: Blending Nature with Luxury
Natural and Organic Woods Meet Luxury
Jean, our visionary Lead Designer, champions the harmony between the organic and the opulent. “Integrating Natural and Organic Woods with luxurious accessories and accents has been a revelation,” Jean shares. “This combination lays the foundation for spaces that feel grounded yet exquisitely refined, marrying the rustic beauty of natural materials with the elegance of luxurious finishes.”
Jean articulates a vision where natural materials coexist with luxurious accents, emphasizing the grounding effect of wood paired with opulent finishes.
The Art of Mixing Metal Finishes
“The strategic Mixing of Metal Finishes,” Jean observes, “invites an eclectic yet cohesive feel into homes, allowing personal expression to shine through in details big and small.”
Jean encourages a thoughtful blend of textures and hues. Highlighting the curated appeal of mixed metal finishes to introduce depth and character into spaces.
Country Club Aesthetic: A Nod to Sophisticated Comfort
Jean is particularly fond of the Country Club Aesthetic, noting, “This trend reimagines spaces with an air of understated luxury, blending warm-toned leathers, wood beams, and deep-colored fabrics into a symphony of comfort and style.”
This trend represents a perfect harmony of sophisticated comfort with luxurious, inviting atmospheres reminiscent of a country club setting.
Embracing Smart Living
In today’s world, integrating technology within our living spaces is not just a trend but a lifestyle. Jean highlights the importance of Home Offices and Home Automation systems, emphasizing how these technologies contribute to making our homes more efficient, secure, and comfortable. “Adopting smart living solutions,” she states, “reflects our commitment to creating environments that cater to our aesthetic preferences and enhance our daily lives through functionality.”
Infusion of Warm Tones
Moving beyond the conventional, Jean embraces the infusion of Reds and Warmer Tones into our homes. “These colors,” she adds, “bring warmth and vibrancy, creating spaces that invite connection and warmth.” This shift towards warmer color palettes is a response to our innate desire for cozy, inviting environments that reflect personal style and bring life to our surroundings.
Jean concludes with a reflection on the overarching message of these trends: “This blend of natural elegance, thoughtful design, and technological integration signifies a move towards more personalized, comfortable, and sustainable living spaces. It’s about creating homes that reflect our individual styles and values while harmonizing with the natural world around us.”
Haley’s Insights: Emerging Trends vs. Phased-out Trends
Now, let Haley guide you through the Trends of 2024 and bid farewell to what’s now considered passé.
Trending Now
Haley introduces the concept of Biophilic Design for connecting with nature, custom kitchen solutions for personalized functionality, the allure of earth tones and textures, the sophistication of mixed metal finishes, and the artistic flair of mixed-stone mosaic tiles.
Biophilic Design: Haley, our insightful Junior Designer, champions Biophilic Design for its ability to integrate natural elements into our homes, promoting well-being and a deeper connection with the environment. “Incorporating elements like water features and living walls brings us closer to nature, offering benefits like improved air quality and mental well-being.”
Kitchen Organization and Personalization: “Tailoring kitchen spaces to fit individual lifestyles is becoming indispensable,” Haley points out. “From pet feeding stations to customizable appliances, personalization is at the forefront.”
Earth Tones and Rich Textures: Haley highlights the shift towards Earth Tones and Rich Textures, creating spaces that invite relaxation and are inherently welcoming.
The Dynamic Appeal of Mixed Metal Finishes: As Haley observes, the trend of mixing metal finishes adds a layer of sophistication and visual interest, allowing for a unique blend of warm and cool tones.
Mixed Texture Tile/Stone: “Adding mixed-texture stone and tiles offers a unique opportunity to incorporate texture into spaces where textiles are less commonly used, such as in bedrooms or living rooms. In areas like bathrooms and kitchens, exploring the use of textured wall tiles can significantly enhance visual interest and add a layer of sophistication to your design.”
Transitioning Styles: Welcoming New Perspectives
It’s time to bid farewell to trends that have served us well but are now making way for more dynamic, personalized expressions of style. Haley provides a candid take on fading trends, encouraging a move beyond the once-standard all-white kitchens, uniform paint schemes, and the once-ubiquitous modern farmhouse aesthetic:
White Kitchens: Long celebrated as a staple for their crisp, clean look, white kitchens are now yielding to a palette rich in color and texture, welcoming a more vibrant approach to kitchen design.
White Paint Everywhere: “We’re moving away from the all-white aesthetic, embracing color to define and differentiate our living spaces with more personality and warmth.”
Modern Farmhouse: “Once the darling of design trends, the modern farmhouse look is stepping aside for more eclectic, contemporary styles that reflect a wider array of personal tastes.”
50% Offset Subway Tile: “The traditional subway tile layout is getting a modern makeover, with 1/3 or 1/4 offsets introducing a fresh, visually interesting twist.”
Matching Furniture Sets: “The era of mix-and-match and eclectic styling is here, moving away from matching furniture sets and encouraging a more personalized, eclectic approach to styling our homes.”
Kimberly’s Corner: Trends Shaping San Diego’s Homes in 2024
As we navigate the evolving home design landscape, certain trends emerge as clear favorites among San Diego homeowners. Here’s where I see the focus:
Expanding and Personalizing Primary Suites
We’re witnessing a move toward primary suites that are not just larger but smarter, with features catering to multigenerational living and aging in place. Think of spaces that adapt to our life’s chapters, equipped with accessibility in mind.
Modernizing the Old: Reconfiguring for Today
The charm of older homes is undeniable, but their traditional, compartmentalized layouts often don’t suit today’s lifestyle. By reconfiguring these spaces for open, flowing layouts, we’re enhancing their functionality and aesthetic appeal, making them perfect for modern living.
The Great Outdoors: Enhancing Living Spaces
In San Diego, our climate beckons us outdoors year-round. We’re extending interior living spaces outside, creating seamless transitions with features like California Rooms and Sunrooms. These spaces offer the perfect blend of comfort and connection to nature, embodying the indoor-outdoor living that Californians cherish.
ADUs: Flexibility for the Future
ADUs are gaining popularity as they cater to our evolving need for flexible living spaces. They’re perfect for multigenerational families looking to live together yet independently, offering separate, self-contained living areas within the same property. This trend reflects a broader shift toward accommodating diverse family dynamics while maintaining privacy and autonomy.
Open-concept Kitchens: The Heart of the Home
The kitchen remains the heart of the home, with open-concept designs emphasizing spacious, multi-functional areas that encourage family gathering and entertaining. These kitchens are designed to be beautiful and practical, serving as the centerpiece for everyday life and special occasions.
